Eye-Interact This project develops the concept
of seeing and being seen, and how this affects how we interact with each other.
The main focus of the project is the eye. Eyes are an integral part in the way
we as humans relate to each other. We
base much of our perceptions of people on what we see: what we see them do,
what they wear, what they look like, and who they associate with. As mirrors show us,
people like, or at least are aware of, the fact that they are being seen, which
is just as important as seeing. People tend to look a certain way when they are
going out and know that people will see them.
In photos, people pose a certain way in order to be perceived by others,
or even themselves, in that way.
Eye-Interact includes a large box with four outside images. The central image is a large eye with the center cut out. Behind the eye is a projection of what the eye is viewing, so that when a person approaches the eye, they can look in and see themselves. The viewers would be seeing themselves, being seen, as well as seeing the eye with their eyes, and this allows them to contemplate the idea of seeing, and the role that eyes play to interact with the world around us. The other 3 images support the concept by offering different ways of seeing and being seen, such as through a camera, TV, or computer screen. Each one of these panels is interactive as well. The center of the camera is a mirror, in which the viewer can look back at himself, and the TV and computer both reflect the images that can be seen through the eye. This interactive box asks the viewer to engage the piece, to get close, and to start thinking about the piece. It was created to inspire thought, not just to be aesthetically pleasing. The idea of interaction between people can be applied cross culturally, having different levels of meaning for different people. |
