Because dehydration can be a serious issue, especially concerning athletes, it is important to maintain proper hydration levels.  Dehydration is when the amount of water that the body is losing is greater than the amount of water it is attaining.  Water leaves the body during: breathing, perspiring, and removal of wastes.  This amount of liquids that leaves the body is significant enough to necessitate a decent amount of water intake; many believe that a person should consume half their pound weight in ounces of water. 

Proper hydration is important because in the body, water transports all substances, delivers nutrients and oxygen to the cells, aids in athletic performance, reduces stress symptoms and signs of aging in the skin, increases efficiency of the immune system, as well as many other functions to aid in a healthy, well functioning body. 

Water within the body consists of two types: intracellular and extra cellular.  Intra-cellular water describes the fluid found inside the cell.  Extra-cellular water is located outside of the cell and is comprised of two components:  Intravascular and extra vascular.  Intravascular is located inside the vessels and is the blood plasma (which includes 20% of the extra-cellular water).  Extra vascular water resides outside of the blood vessels and surrounds the cells of the body (holds 80% of water outside the cells).  In order for the body to maintain a healthy level of hydration, both the intracellular and extracellular water levels should be full.  When the body gets dehydrated, the levels of water in the intravascular spaces will become depleted.  The body will try to compensate for this by transporting water from the cells to the blood vessels, but this is a very temporary solution. 

The Hydro-Sensory water bottle is a new chic way to prevent dehydration.  Located in the front of the upper-half of the bottle is 2 by 2 inch scanner.  When the bottle is picked up, the thumb will be placed on the scanner and a laser will scan the thumb, reading the intravascular fluid levels to ascertain the percentage of water that resides within the spaces.  A machine will then calculate the percentage of intercellular water depletion to determine the appropriate number of ounces that need to be consumed in order to regain an optimum level of hydration.  This number will then appear on a lighted LED screen to let the consumer know how many ounces they should consume.  If the water depletion is somewhat low, the screen will light up a pale blue, if the low water condition is more significant, the screen will turn a pale orange, and if levels are critical, the screen will show a bright red color.  The bottle holds 30 ounces, and every ounce is label by a tic mark on the side of the transparent water bottle so that the consumer can see how many ounces they have or need to drink.  The bottle is made out of poly-carbonate resin and is environmentally friendly. It has a screw-on top for filling the bottle up, and a sealed flip-top for drinking out of.  This product will be especially beneficial to athletes because they will know exactly how much water they need to consume to stay healthy and attain an optimum performance level, without consuming excess water weight.  Dehydration is a particularly prominent concern for athletes and this product would be very helpful for them, as well as for the everyday consumer who wishes to maintain a healthy hydration level for optimum living.
